Where it comes from
From Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious, gives Latin Johannes to Zaneta
The story of Zaneta
The Venetian form has a bearer worth knowing, mostly for what her life says about the century. Zanetta Farussi was a shoemaker's daughter in Venice who married an actor and went on the stage herself, which in the early eighteenth century placed her outside respectable society by definition. She toured — Verona, Dresden, London, St Petersburg — for decades, leaving her children behind with her mother, and she died in Dresden in the service of a court theater. Her eldest son wrote a very long memoir of his own life that made him one of the most famous men in Europe, and she appears in it as the mother who was always somewhere else. Her name is the Venetian diminutive of Giovanna, spelled almost exactly as this page's name is spelled, four hundred years and a continent away from the Czech version of the same thing.
Meaning
God is gracious
Whichever route the name took, the source is the same: the Hebrew name behind John, which is a short sentence saying that God has been gracious. French made the feminine Jeanne and then the diminutive Jeannette; Czech, Slovak and Polish write that with a Ž, and Venetian Italian arrived at something almost identical from Giovanna. The meaning is not in doubt anywhere along the chain. What varies is only which country's spelling of it a family is carrying.
How the name formed
- Hebrew Yohanan, God is gracious, gives Latin Johannes
- French forms Jeanne and the diminutive Jeannette
- Venetian Italian produces Zanetta from Giovanna
- Czech, Slovak and Polish write the name with a Ž
- American records drop the diacritic, giving Zaneta

Pronouncing Zaneta
zhah-NEH-tah
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. In Czech and Polish the opening letter carries a mark that makes it the sound in measure; without the mark, American speakers say a plain z, zah-NET-uh, and both are now heard for this spelling.

Fashion outlook
Zaneta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- A real name in several European countries rather than an American invention
- The opening Z makes it memorable without making it difficult
- Clear, even syllables that survive being spelled out over a telephone
- The diacritic that tells a Czech or Polish reader how to say it does not survive in English, so the pronunciation splits.
- Two unrelated traditions produce almost this exact spelling, which makes the family's own story the only reliable one.
- It is rare in America, so the name will be spelled aloud often.
