The story of Zachry
One bearer worth knowing did his work in ledgers. Zachary Macaulay governed Sierra Leone in the seventeen-nineties, a colony founded for freed and formerly enslaved people, and he sailed home in the hold of a slave ship in order to see the trade from the inside. For the next thirty years he collected evidence against it — shipping records, testimony, numbers — with a thoroughness that made him the reference library of the abolition campaign; colleagues in Parliament are said to have settled arguments by asking what Macaulay knew. He was not the orator of that movement and is not the name people remember from it. He was the man with the files, and the files were what eventually held up in Parliament. It is a fair association for a name that means a promise has been remembered.
Meaning
the Lord has remembered
The Hebrew name is a short sentence with the divine element at the end, and its sense is that a promise has not been forgotten. It was a common name in the period the biblical books cover — there are more than two dozen distinct men called it in the Hebrew Bible, which is a sign of an ordinary name rather than a special one. The reading is not in dispute. The spelling on this page carries the same meaning as the full form; nothing was lost with the vowel except a syllable.
How the name formed
- Hebrew Zekharyah: the Lord has remembered
- Greek and Latin give Zacharias, then English Zachary
- The unstressed middle vowel drops in ordinary speech
- Zachry is written down without it

Fashion outlook
Zachry sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Sounds identical to a very familiar name, so it is never mispronounced
- Shorter on paper than the standard form while keeping all of its history
- The short form Zach is universal, immediate and requires no explanation
- The standard spelling dominates, so the missing vowel will be reinserted by nearly everyone who writes the name from hearing it.
- Zachry also exists as a surname, which invites the usual confusion about which name goes in which box on a form.
- There is no way to tell from the record whether a family shortened the name deliberately or a clerk did it once and it stuck.
