Where it comes from

The story of Zachory

An angel appears to an elderly priest in the temple and tells him his wife will have a son. He points out, reasonably, that they are both old. For this he is struck mute until the birth, comes out unable to explain what happened, and spends the pregnancy in silence. When the child is born and the family assumes he will be named after his father, the mother says no, and the neighbors appeal to the father, who writes the name on a tablet and immediately gets his voice back. The detail that he writes it, rather than nodding at a suggestion, is the point of the scene, and it is the first thing he has been able to communicate in nine months.

Meaning

Fashion outlook

Zachory sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Zach is available as a short form from the first day and needs no explaining.
  • The meaning is settled and can be given in four words.
  • The sound is completely familiar, so the name is never a puzzle to say.
What to consider
  • Zachary is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected to it constantly.
  • The changed letter cannot be heard, so the spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • No reason for it is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
