Zacary removes the h and the c then has to be read as a k by rule. English says c hard before an a, so the spelling works without the h that the standard form uses; taking it out makes the name shorter and slightly more regular than the version everybody writes.

Where it comes from

The story of Zacary

The prophet of this name saw some of the strangest things in the Hebrew Bible. In the space of a few chapters he is shown a flying scroll thirty feet long that goes into houses and consumes them; a woman sitting inside a barrel who is identified as wickedness itself and pushed back in with a lead lid; two women with wings like a stork who carry the barrel away to Babylon; four chariots with horses of different colors coming out from between two bronze mountains; and a lampstand fed by two olive trees. The visions are explained to him by an interpreting angel, and the explanations do not help very much.

Meaning

The Lord has remembered

Hebrew zakhar, to remember, with the divine element, making a short sentence about God calling something to mind. The ch in the usual English spelling is a Greek convention for a Hebrew letter and has nothing to do with the ch of church.

Fashion outlook

Zacary sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling is one letter shorter and no more ambiguous than the standard form.
  • Zac and Cary are two short forms with nothing in common.
  • The spoken name is completely established and never needs repeating.
What to consider
  • Zachary is enormously commoner and this will be read as a slip.
  • The missing h removes the Greek convention that connects the name to its relatives.
  • It is closely dated to the last decades of the twentieth century.
