The story of Yuri
George slaying the dragon is a late addition to a much older martyr's cult, and the name spread across the Orthodox world. Yuri Dolgorukiy founded Moscow in the twelfth century. Yuri Gagarin orbited the earth on 12 April 1961. Russian emigration brought the name to America, where it is in current use.
Meaning
farmer, earth-worker
Through George, from the Greek georgos — ge, 'earth', and ergon, 'work'. Russian took the Greek Georgios and produced both Georgiy and Yuri, which developed as separate names. The Greek elements are ordinary and the compound is undisputed.

The Connell test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yuri's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Connell climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Connell's path sketches the road Yuri is walking now.
