Ysabelle
Feminine · “my God is an oath”
The y is not a modern flourish. Medieval scribes wrote Ysabel routinely, because y was the ordinary letter for the i sound at the start of a word — it stood taller and read more clearly in a cramped hand. This spelling is older than the one it looks like a variation of.

The story of Ysabelle
Elizabeth lost its front in the south of France, became Elisabel and then Isabel, and traveled into Spain and Portugal, where it effectively replaced the original. For several centuries nobody regarded the two as the same name: England had Elizabeths, Spain had Isabels, and both countries had queens of each. The medieval spelling was Ysabel as often as Isabel, and the y persisted in Spanish and French documents into the sixteenth century. What is modern about Ysabelle is the double l and the final e, which are French rather than Spanish, and which produce a longer name than either country ever used.

my God is an oath
Isabel began as a Provencal reduction of Elizabeth, from Hebrew Elisheva: el, God, with a word meaning both an oath and the number seven. The two names then went separate ways for so long that they were treated as different names, with different queens, different saints and different feast days.

IZ-uh-bell
Three syllables, stress on the first. The y is said as a short i and nothing else; French Isabelle puts the weight at the end, ee-za-BEL, and both are heard in American families.

The Cherrish test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Ysabelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cherrish climbed just as high around 1972, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cherrish's path sketches the road Ysabelle is walking now.
Ysabelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Four short forms of very different registers, two of which are full names.
- The name is recognized without translation across Spanish, French, Portuguese and Italian.
- The spelling is genuinely historical rather than invented, which most y-respellings are not.
- Isabelle and Isabella are both far commoner, so this spelling will be corrected for life.
- Nine letters is long, and the y at the front makes it look longer.
- The stress falls differently in English and French, so a bilingual family will hear two names.
