Yesica
Feminine
Yesica is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 2,411 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Spanish already uses the letter j, for a sound made at the back of the throat — the one in Juan and in jefe. So an English name beginning with the j of Jessica cannot be written that way in Spanish without changing it completely. Y is the letter that keeps the sound.

Where it comes from
From Iscah to Yesica
The story of Yesica
Shakespeare needed a Jewish woman's name and appears to have gone to Genesis, where Abraham's niece Iscah is mentioned once and never again; English Bibles of the period wrote her Jesca, and Jessica is that with an ending attached. It was not a name anyone had before the play. It stayed rare for three hundred years and then became one of the most given names in the English-speaking world in the space of two decades, which is when the Spanish-speaking Americas took it. Spanish then did what it had to: the j was already spoken for, so Yesica and Yessica carry the English sound with the letter Spanish uses for it.

Not established
Jessica was coined by Shakespeare for The Merchant of Venice, most likely from Iscah, a name in Genesis, which appears in sixteenth-century English Bibles as Jesca. Iscah's own meaning is not established. The name therefore has a documented inventor and an undocumented root, which is an unusual combination.

The Tynisha test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yesica's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Tynisha climbed just as high around 1977, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Tynisha's path sketches the road Yesica is walking now.
Yesica sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The spelling keeps the intended sound in Spanish, which the English spelling cannot.
- The name behind it has a precisely documented origin in a specific play.
- Three short forms, one from each of the two languages it lives in.
- Jessica is far commoner in America and this will be treated as a variant of it.
- Yessica with a double s is equally used, so even the Spanish spelling forks.
- The very few boys given this spelling will be read as girls on paper.
