Yucatec Maya is not a dead language: it has roughly eight hundred thousand speakers, is a first language in villages across the Yucatan peninsula, and is taught and written today. It also has something almost nothing else in the Americas has, which is a surviving pre-conquest literature. Four Maya codices escaped the burnings, and the Books of Chilam Balam were written down in the Latin alphabet after the conquest by Maya scribes recording their own tradition. That documentation is precisely why a claimed Maya meaning can be tested. This one has not been shown, and the name is better described as a modern Mexican coinage built on Maya-sounding syllables.
