Our story of Yamil
Ours, offered as ours. Spanish has taken Arabic words twice with a gap of centuries between: the medieval borrowings from eight hundred years of al-Andalus, which gave Spanish thousands of words including nearly every one beginning with al-, and modern borrowings from twentieth-century contact. Yamil belongs to the second wave, spelled by modern Spanish rules. The first wave gave almohada, aceite and ojalá, and nobody thinks of those as foreign at all.
Meaning
beautiful, handsome
From Arabic jamil, beautiful; the root j-m-l also gives jamal, a camel. Spanish writes the Arabic j as y because the Spanish j is a throat sound and cannot carry it.

The Servando test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Yamil's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Servando climbed just as high around 1953, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Servando's path sketches the road Yamil is walking now.
Yamil sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A settled meaning with a genuinely surprising root behind it.
- Five letters and two syllables, quick to write.
- Every letter is said, so Spanish speakers read it correctly at once.
- Jamil is the standard Arabic transliteration and looks quite different.
- English readers do not know where the stress falls.
- A name meaning handsome sets an expectation the child did not choose.
