The story of Wilhelmenia
The Dutch national anthem is sung in the first person by the man the name comes from. The Wilhelmus is a sixteenth-century song in which William of Orange speaks directly, and the first letters of its fifteen stanzas spell out his name; it is among the oldest anthem texts anywhere. Two things in it surprise people who read it through: he declares himself of German blood, which was simply what a nobleman of Nassau was, and he says he has always honored the king of Spain, the monarch he was in open revolt against. It is a protest song that insists on its own loyalty.
Meaning
Will and helmet
The Germanic elements behind William: one about will or determination, one meaning helmet and by extension protection. The feminine ending is Latin in shape and was applied across German-speaking Europe to almost every man's name, which is why so many long women's names of this kind exist.
