Wends was what German speakers called the Slavic peoples living between the Elbe and the Oder, and the word covered a great many different groups over a great many centuries. Most of them were absorbed. One was not: the Sorbs of Lusatia, in eastern Germany, still speak a Slavic language, still print newspapers in it, and are still sometimes called Wends in older writing, including by the communities of Wendish speakers who emigrated to Texas and Australia in the nineteenth century and kept the name. The word turns up on the map in Wendland and in a hundred German place names beginning Windisch. It has nothing to do with this name, which came out of a nursery and a theater. But the syllable was busy long before.
