The story of Waymon
Occupational surnames are an inventory of a vanished economy, and their regional variation is a dialect map. The job of fulling cloth, treading it in water and fuller's earth to thicken and clean it, produced Fuller in the south-east, Walker in the north and west, and Tucker in the south-west: one trade, three words, three regions, still legible in a phone book. The same is true of Baxter for a baker and Webster for a weaver, both originally female forms, and of Chandler, Cooper, Fletcher, Wainwright and Wayman, which name candles, barrels, arrows, wagons and the driving of them. Nina Simone was born Eunice Waymon, and the surname was carried into American music by her family from North Carolina.

The Ellwood test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Waymon's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ellwood climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ellwood's path sketches the road Waymon is walking now.
Waymon sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
