Waylen
Masculine
Waylen is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 2,552 boys against 63 girls since 1880.
Waylen sits one letter away from Waylon and two from Wayland, and behind all three stands Wēland, the legendary smith of Old English and Norse story — named in the poem Deor, and in Beowulf, where a mail-shirt is called "Weland's work." A neolithic long barrow in Oxfordshire still carries his name: Wayland's Smithy. The modern spelling is much newer than the legend, and it says itself on first reading: WAY-len.

The story of Waylen
Wēland was known across the Germanic world long before he was a baby name: the Old English poem Deor opens with his suffering, Beowulf refers to armor as his handiwork, and Norse tradition tells the same story of Völundr. In England the name also survived flatly and practically as a surname, Wayland, from a place beside a road. Surnames of that kind crossed to America and were recycled as first names in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the -on and -en spellings followed the -and one. Waylen is the most recent of that family to be written down as a given name, and its whole wave in the United States is very recent — its bearers are mostly small children.

Either "land by the road" or the Old English name Wēland, borne by the legendary smith
Two roads meet here. As an English surname, Wayland comes from Old English weg ("way, road") plus land — land beside the highway. As a personal name it goes back to Wēland, the smith of Germanic legend, whose own root is not settled; it has been tied to a word for skill or craft, but no reading has won out. Waylen is a modern respelling and inherits both.

The Maximillian test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Waylen's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Maximillian climbed just as high around 1999, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Maximillian's path sketches the road Waylen is walking now.
Waylen is climbing fast right now. Steep climbs tend to come with steep descents — the quicker a name arrives, the more firmly it belongs to its moment.

The trade-off
- Reads correctly at first sight for English speakers: two syllables, no silent letters, no ambiguity about where the stress falls.
- The sound is already familiar in American English through Waylon and Wayland, so nobody has to be taught how to say it.
- Traceable to a name recorded in Old English poetry over a thousand years ago, so it is new in spelling only.
- Clips naturally to Way, and to Len if a shorter, older-fashioned option is wanted.
- Waylen and Waylon sound exactly alike, so this spelling will be written the other way on forms, class lists and coffee cups for life. Worth deciding in advance how much correcting you want to do.
- The near-identical Waylon carries a strong American country-music association for many adults, and it tends to attach to this spelling too.
- Almost everyone carrying this name right now is a young child, so there is no adult version of it in most people's experience yet — and a child with it will very likely be the only one in the room.
- It sits in a large group of similar-sounding modern boys' names, which means it may be heard as one of a set rather than as distinct.
