Walker
Masculine · Old English roots · “a fuller of cloth”
Walker is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 47,914 boys against 1,037 girls since 1880. See Walker as a girl name
Walker began as a job title in medieval England — the worker who trod wet wool in a trough to thicken it into cloth. It made the long journey from trade to surname to first name, and in the twentieth century it was carried by an American novelist and an American photographer of the Depression years. In the mouth it is two easy beats, a flat vowel and a soft ending, with nothing to explain twice.

Where it comes from
From wealcan (Old English, 'to roll, toss') to Walker
The story of Walker
The name is English, and it started as an occupation rather than a person — walkere, the fuller, one of the most widespread crafts in the wool country of northern England and southern Scotland. As trades hardened into hereditary surnames in the later Middle Ages, Walker became one of the most common surnames in Britain, and it crossed to North America with those families. Its life as a first name belongs to the American habit of moving family surnames to the front, a practice long established in the South and still going strong; Walker has been on US records since the nineteenth century, quietly at first and much more visibly of late.
Meaning
a fuller of cloth — one who trod cloth to clean and thicken it
The trade name comes from Middle English walkere, from Old English wealcan, 'to roll or toss'. Fullers worked wet wool by foot in a trough, which is where the walking is: the word describes the motion of the job, not travel on a road.

The Jay test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Walker's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Jay climbed just as high around 1960, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Jay's path sketches the road Walker is walking now.

The trade-off
- One spelling, and it is one nearly everyone has already seen on a mailbox or a class roster, so it rarely needs to be spelled out.
- Says itself. No competing pronunciations, no silent letters, no adjustment needed for readers of other English accents.
- A documented English word and surname running back to the Middle Ages, with an unbroken record in the US since the nineteenth century.
- Used whole in almost every setting, which suits parents who would rather not have their choice shortened by other people.
- It is climbing quickly right now. Names on a steep rise tend to date closely to their wave, so this one may end up marking a specific stretch of years.
- Almost nickname-proof. If you like a name with a built-in short form for tired mornings, Walker offers very little.
- As a surname-first name, it gets read as a last name on forms and in databases now and then — a small, lifelong nuisance rather than a problem.
- The common noun is also a mobility aid, and there was a long-running Texas Ranger series with the name in the title. Neither has kept the name from thriving.
