Where it comes from

The story of Viviane

Saint Bibiana or Viviana was a Roman martyr of the fourth century and her name entered the calendar. Far more consequentially for French usage, the prose Lancelot and the Vulgate cycle give the Lady of the Lake the name Viviane: she raises Lancelot, gives Arthur his sword, and — depending on the version — imprisons Merlin in an enchantment he taught her himself. That made Viviane an ordinary French name. Its American record is thin, following Franco-American and Haitian families, with a peak in 1935; the English Vivian and Vivienne have been much commoner.

Meaning

Alive, lively

From Latin vivus, alive, giving the Roman names Vivianus and Viviana. The reading is settled. French Viviane is the feminine form, and the -ane ending is French rather than Latin. The Arthurian Viviane's name may be a French adaptation of a Welsh or Breton word rather than the Latin, but the modern name descends from the Latin.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Viviane went to 23 girls in 2025, but Vivianne is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 137, which makes it the 823rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,587 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 11,732 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 69,881 for Viviane itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
