The story of Vivek
The monk who made the word familiar outside India took it as his religious name and then took Chicago by surprise. He arrived at a world parliament of religions in eighteen ninety-three without proper credentials, was nearly turned away, opened his address with a form of words addressing the audience as brothers and sisters, and got a standing ovation before he had said anything else. He spent the next four years lecturing across America and Britain. Almost everything the English-speaking world thinks it knows about Vedanta and yoga comes down through those lectures.
