Virgle drops the vowel that made the name a poet's. Take the i out of the middle of Virgil and the classical name goes with it: what remains reads as an American surname, or as nothing in particular, and nobody meeting it would think of Rome.

Where it comes from

The story of Virgle

The poet's name was not spelled with an i. Every ancient source that matters writes it with an e — Vergilius — and the i is a medieval alteration, probably encouraged by association with the Latin words for a maiden and for a wand, both of which attracted stories about him as a magician in the Middle Ages. Classical scholars have been using the e-spelling for a century and a half for exactly this reason, and it remains standard in academic writing, while the world outside carries on with the medieval version. So a name that looks like the most solidly classical thing a person could be called is in fact carrying a mistake made about a thousand years after the man died.

Virgle sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1924, with 92 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Virgle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling writes down what the fuller form actually sounds like.
  • It is short, plain and easy to say on first meeting.
  • It is genuinely rare with no strong association attached to this form.
What to consider
  • Virgil is the standard spelling and this one gets corrected constantly.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
