The story of Virgel
The practice was called the Virgilian lots and it worked like this: open the book, put a finger down, read the line, and treat it as an answer. Hadrian is said to have consulted it about whether he would be emperor; a Gaulish bishop used it in the fifth century; Charles the First did it at Oxford during the civil war and landed on a passage about a king driven from his kingdom and dying before his time, which his companions found difficult to explain away. The habit rests on the assumption that a poem of that stature is not entirely under its author's control. Christians did the same thing with the Bible and called it by the same name, and the church spent centuries trying to stop them.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Roman family name Vergilius has no established meaning; it is a clan name of the ordinary kind and its origin was already lost in antiquity. The i in the modern spelling is itself a medieval alteration. This version changes the second vowel as well, so the name now has two letters that are not the ones it started with.

Two syllables with the stress at the front. The second is reduced to nothing, which is why the i in the standard spelling and the e in this one are said identically and neither can be defended by ear.

Fashion outlook
Virgel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The name carries one of the largest reputations in European literature.
- It is recognizable in Italian, Spanish and French with almost no change.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- Virgil is the standard spelling and this one will be corrected constantly.
- The record carries it for girls as well as boys, so it signals nothing on a form.
- It is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American records.
