The story of Vinton
In the early 1970s two engineers were given the problem of getting incompatible computer networks to exchange information, and Vinton Cerf and his colleague wrote the paper that solved it. The idea was to stop trying to make the networks alike and instead agree on a set of rules for the packets traveling between them — a common language spoken at the edges rather than a common machine. Everything that has happened since runs on that decision. Cerf has spent the decades afterwards arguing, patiently and in public, that the network should stay open, which is a longer and less glamorous job than inventing it was.

Three routes are open and none can be shown. Vinton is an English place name of the ordinary kind, with a settlement word at the end. It is also a plausible variant of Vinson, which is a patronymic of Vincent. And it is the name of half a dozen American towns and a county in Ohio, several of which were named after a nineteenth-century congressman rather than after anything older. A family carrying it as a first name may have taken it from any of the three.

Fashion outlook
Vinton sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It has the settled sound of an old surname without belonging to any famous family.
- Vint is short, unusual and genuinely usable, which few surname-names offer.
- It is rare in every decade of the record, so it carries no generation with it.
- It will be heard as Vincent and Winton by people meeting it for the first time.
- There is no meaning to give him, only three possible origins.
- It reads unmistakably as a surname, which some people will treat as a mistake.
