The story of Vinita
Vinnie Ream was a teenager working as a post office clerk in wartime Washington when she talked her way into a sculptor's studio and then into the White House, where Lincoln allowed her half an hour a day for five months while she modeled him. After his death Congress voted her the commission for the full-length marble that still stands in the rotunda, making her the first woman to receive a federal art commission and the youngest artist of any sex to get one; there was a great deal of comment about both facts, most of it unkind. She delivered the statue at twenty-three. A Cherokee leader who admired her named a railway town in Indian Territory after her, and the town is still there.

Modest, well trained
As a Sanskrit name, vinita means disciplined, modest or well brought up, and it is in ordinary use in India. As an American name it is a build on Vinnie, itself a shortening of Lavinia or Davina, and carries no meaning at all. The two arrived at the same spelling independently, and a birth record does not say which is meant.

Pronouncing Vinita
vi-NEE-tuh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The Oklahoma town is said the same way. In Hindi the first vowel is fuller and the t is made with the tongue further forward, which English speakers do not reproduce and Indian families do not expect them to.

Fashion outlook
Vinita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is a real and current name in India as well as an American one, so it travels.
- Vinnie and Nita are two short forms with nothing at all in common.
- The rhythm is easy and every sound in it is available to an English speaker.
- Two independent origins means two possible meanings and no way for the name to signal which.
- It will be heard as Vanita and Bonita, both of which are commoner in the United States.
- The American line has no meaning to give a child, only a sculptor and a town.
