Viet

Viet is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 1,085 boys against 11 girls since 1880.
Viet is the name of a people, and the country is named after it rather than the other way round. The full form means the Viet of the south — and the order of those two words was decided in a diplomatic exchange with a Chinese emperor who did not want the new name confused with an old kingdom.

Where it comes from
From an ancient ethnonym in Chinese records to Viet
The story of Viet
The same four letters are a European name as well, and by a completely unrelated road. Veit is the German form of Vitus, a Sicilian boy martyred under Diocletian who became one of the fourteen holy helpers and the patron saint of dancers, actors and epileptics; the involuntary movements of one nervous disorder were called Saint Vitus's dance for centuries. Veit was a common German first name for hundreds of years, and it turns up in American records spelled the same way as the Vietnamese name. Two entirely separate histories arrive at one spelling, which is a thing that happens far more often than name books admit.
Meaning
the Viet people
The word is an ethnonym of great antiquity, used in Chinese records for peoples living south of the Yangtze long before there was a country. When a new Vietnamese emperor asked the Qing court to recognize his realm at the start of the nineteenth century he proposed Nam Viet, the southern Viet. The court reversed the two syllables to Viet Nam, because Nam Viet was the name of an old kingdom whose territory included land the Chinese had no intention of conceding. The country has carried the reversed form ever since.
How the name formed
- an ancient ethnonym in Chinese records
- the Qing court reverses the two syllables in 1804
- German Veit, from the martyr Vitus, in parallel use
- Viet appears in American records after 1975
- given to sons and daughters alike

Fashion outlook
Viet sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Four letters, unmistakable on paper, and impossible to shorten into something unwanted.
- It carries an entire national identity in one word, which very few given names do.
- It works for a son or a daughter, which Vietnamese naming allows and English rarely does.
- In America the word is the name of a country and, for older people, of a war.
- English speakers will put the stress in the wrong place and lengthen it into two clear syllables.
- It is more often a middle name than a first name in Vietnamese practice.
