The story of Victorio
Victorio was a leader of the Chihenne, the Warm Springs band of the Chiricahua Apache, whose homeland lay around Ojo Caliente in New Mexico. When the government moved his people to San Carlos in Arizona in 1877, he refused to stay, and from 1879 he fought the United States and Mexican armies across the borderlands with a small band. In October 1880 Mexican troops under Joaquín Terrazas surrounded his people at Tres Castillos in Chihuahua, and Victorio was killed there. He is remembered today as one of the most capable leaders of the Apache resistance.
