The story of Victorine
The woman who looks straight out of two of the most argued-over paintings of the nineteenth century — naked at a picnic with clothed men in one, on a bed with a servant and a cat in the other — was called Victorine Meurent, and she was a professional model for about a decade. What almost nobody mentioned until quite recently is that she was also a painter. She studied, she exhibited a self-portrait at the Paris Salon in a year when the man who had painted her was himself rejected, and she showed there several times afterwards; she was a member of a national artists' society. A story circulated after her death that she had ended as a destitute alcoholic, and it was repeated for a hundred years; researchers have since established that she lived quietly with a companion in a Paris suburb and went on painting. One of her pictures has been found.
Meaning
victory; conqueror
From the Latin victor, with the French feminine ending added. Victory was also a Roman goddess with temples and a statue in the senate house, so the word was a name long before it was a Christian one. Whether this spelling came through French or was built in America from Victoria is a separate and unrecorded question.

Fashion outlook
Victorine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is documented, immediate and needs no explaining.
- Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
- Back stress gives a long name a firm landing.
- The ending will be read the English way on first sight, giving a different name.
- Victoria is far commoner and will be written for it.
- It is a long name for forms designed around shorter ones.
