The story of Victoriano
When a Roman was adopted he took the full name of his new father and converted his own family name into an adjective ending in -ianus, so Gaius Octavius, adopted by Caesar, became Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, which historians shorten to Octavian. The convention preserved both lineages in one name, and it produced a large set of Latin names in -ianus that outlived the practice: Julianus, Marianus, Aemilianus, Victorianus. Latin also made Victoria a goddess, the equivalent of Greek Nike, with a temple on the Palatine, and her name is an abstract noun, victory itself, of the kind Roman religion personified freely. Victoriano is the Spanish form and reached American records with Mexican families.
Meaning
Latin victoria, victory
From Latin Victorianus, belonging to Victor or to Victoria, from vincere, to conquer. The -ianus suffix marked belonging and was used in Roman adoption to keep the birth family visible. The American peak is 1902.
