Vicent
Masculine · “conquering”
Vicent drops a letter that every standard spelling of this name keeps, in English, Spanish, French and Latin alike — and it is also the ordinary Catalan and Valencian spelling, which makes the record ambiguous. The saint behind it acquired an unlikely job through wordplay.

The story of Vicent
Vincent of Saragossa is the patron of winegrowers across France, Spain, Portugal and much of central Europe, and the reason appears to be at least partly a pun. His feast falls on the twenty-second of January, when vines are pruned, and his name splits neatly into two French words meaning wine and blood — vin and sang — which is exactly the kind of connection medieval piety made and then built on. Proverbs attached themselves: if his day is clear, expect good wine. Confraternities of winegrowers took him as patron across the wine regions, processions still carry his statue through vineyards, and Burgundy keeps a January festival for him. A martyr from Roman Spain ended up supervising the pruning because his name sounded right in French.
Meaning
conquering
From the Latin present participle of vincere, to conquer. The n is part of the stem and appears in every standard form; Catalan and Valencian drop it, which is why this spelling is both a native one and an American simplification.

Fashion outlook
Vicent sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Vince comes off it at once and needs no explanation anywhere.
- It is the genuine Catalan and Valencian spelling as well as a simplification.
- The meaning is documented and unambiguous.
- Vincent and Vicente are both commoner and will be written for it.
- The dropped letter is audible in English, so the two are not interchangeable there.
- Whether a given family meant the Catalan form or a simplification is not recorded.
