Where it comes from

The story of Vester

The document claimed that Constantine, cured of leprosy by Sylvester, had given the pope authority over Rome and the whole west. It was used to justify papal claims for centuries and was demolished in the fifteenth century by a scholar who showed the Latin was wrong for the period — an early and famous piece of textual criticism. The name itself is older and quieter than any of that, and dropping its first syllable produces something that looks like the Latin word for clothing rather than for a forest, which is where most readers' guesses go.

Meaning

of the woods

The Latin silvestris means wooded or of the forest, from silva, a wood. The name is an ordinary Latin adjective used as a personal name, and this form is the back of it standing alone.

Fashion outlook

Vester sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both syllables are readable, so the name is said correctly at sight.
  • The meaning is concrete and pleasant: woodland.
  • It has an unbroken run in American records from the earliest years of the count.
What to consider
  • It looks like the Latin word for clothing, which is what most readers will guess.
  • The spelling is recorded for girls as well as boys in the United States.
  • It reads clearly as a name of the nineteenth century.
