Where it comes from

Our story of Vessie

Our story of Vessie begins at a hearth. Vesta was the Roman goddess of the household fire, whose flame was kept burning in her round temple in the Forum, and her name was one of the classical names nineteenth-century America liked. Shorten it the American way and it becomes Vessie, a name for the kitchen rather than the temple. Across the Atlantic the same letters spell the French word for a bladder, and French has a proverb about people who take bladders for lanterns, prendre des vessies pour des lanternes, meaning to be fooled by something that only looks like the real thing.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No full name has been documented behind Vessie. For girls, Vesta, the name of the Roman goddess of the hearth, is one natural source; for the rare boy, Sylvester, which American English shortened to Vester, is another. The record holds only the short form and does not say which.

Vessie sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 23 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Vessie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rhymes with Bessie and Jessie, so it sounds familiar on first hearing.
  • Short and spelled as it sounds.
  • Recorded for boys as well as girls, though almost always for girls.
What to consider
  • French speakers will recognize the word for a bladder; it is an ordinary anatomical word there and rarely remarked on.
  • People will hear Bessie or Jessie and write those, so the V will need pointing out.
  • A boy named Vessie would be very rare even among the few who carry it, and would be taken for a girl on most forms.
