Verta
Feminine
Verta is almost certainly a piece of a longer name, and the longer name has a good story behind it. Alverta and Alberta were both in wide American use when Verta appears, and Alberta is one of the very few large places on earth named after a woman — specifically, after the fourth name of a queen's daughter, which is a level of obscurity most place names cannot match.

The story of Verta
When the Canadian district was given a name in the 1880s, the Governor General chose one belonging to his wife: Princess Louise Caroline Alberta, the fourth daughter of Queen Victoria. She was a sculptor of real ability who had trained at the National Art Training School, campaigned quietly for women's education, and disliked the ceremonial life she had married into. The province took the fourth of her four names because the first three were already spoken for on the map. Her Christian name survives on a lake, and Alberta — the one she is least likely to have been called at home — is on a province of a quarter of a million square miles.

The likeliest reading is that Verta is Alverta with the front removed, which was an ordinary thing to do in nineteenth-century American speech. Alverta is itself a variant of Alberta, the feminine of Albert, from Germanic elements meaning noble and bright. A Latin route through the words for truth or green has been suggested and there is nothing to support it. The name looks Latin and is not, which is a common trap with short names ending in a.

Fashion outlook
Verta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, and completely unambiguous when spoken.
- It has a genuine nineteenth-century American history and a plausible royal cousin.
- Vertie is a warm short form of exactly the kind that is coming back into fashion.
- The origin is a reasonable guess rather than a fact, and no reference work will confirm it.
- It will be heard as Verna, Vera and Berta by people meeting it for the first time.
- It belongs to the oldest layer of the American record and has had no revival at all.
