Vernia
Feminine · “Home-born”
The Latin word at the root of this name did not mean springtime. It meant a slave born inside the household rather than bought, and the adjective made from it is the ancestor of the English word vernacular. The gentler reading everyone gives the name comes from a different Latin word that merely looks similar.

The story of Vernia
The second of those words had a remarkable career. A vernaculus was anything home-grown rather than imported, and Roman writers applied it to speech: the vernacular was the language people actually spoke at home, as against the formal Latin of literature and law. The term survived into the Middle Ages, when the distinction mattered enormously, since everything official was in Latin and everything ordinary was not; writers who chose to work in the vernacular were making a decision with consequences. The word is now the standard term for a language as it is really used, and it descends from a word for a person who was born into a household and belonged to it. Names built on this root reached American records in the nineteenth century, and Vernia is the version with a Latin ending added on the end.

Home-born
Two Latin words are being confused. Ver means spring and gives vernus, springlike, which is where the usual gloss comes from. Verna is separate: it meant a slave born in the house, and its adjective vernaculus meant domestic or native. Whether a given name descends from one, the other or neither is not recoverable, but the two should not be treated as one word, and they routinely are.

Fashion outlook
Vernia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Short, clear and easy to spell once heard, with no letters doing hidden work.
- Verna and Nia are both usable as everyday names and sound entirely unalike.
- The name has a genuinely surprising etymology that a child can look up and check.
- The commonly printed meaning of springtime rests on a confusion, so it cannot be repeated in good conscience.
- Verna is much commoner and will be written instead of this by anyone taking dictation.
- The name is strongly dated to the turn of the last century in American use.
