Where it comes from

The story of Verner

A Danish scholar with this name solved the outstanding problem in historical linguistics. The great sound law describing how Germanic consonants had shifted worked almost everywhere and had a set of exceptions nobody could account for, which was embarrassing for a discipline claiming that sound change was regular. He worked out, apparently while reading in bed, that the exceptions depended on where the stress had fallen in the original word — and that the accent had since moved, hiding the cause. The law is named after him. It rescued the whole enterprise, and he published it in a single paper.

army of the Warini

The first element is generally taken as the name of a Germanic people and the second as the word for an army or host. The identification of the tribe is not certain, but the second element is not in doubt.

Verner sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1917, with 70 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Verner sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vern sits inside it as a short form of the same period and place.
  • The spelling records the sound more directly than the German one.
  • It is genuinely rare with no competing associations.
What to consider
  • Werner is commoner in America and the two get confused constantly.
  • The spelling is recorded for a few girls, but nearly every child with it is a boy.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
