Feminine

Vernelle looks French and is not; France has no such name and never has. What it has is the ending, which American families borrowed in quantity in the early twentieth century and attached to whatever front half they liked, producing a whole class of names that sound continental and exist only here.

The story of Vernelle
The other name that shares the front half has a story that has escaped into the language. Admiral Edward Vernon commanded the British fleet in the Caribbean in the seventeen-forties, was popular enough with his men to be nicknamed after the coarse grogram cloak he wore in bad weather, and issued an order that the sailors' daily rum ration be watered down before it was served. The men named the diluted drink after the nickname, and grog has been an English word ever since, along with groggy, which is what too much of it made them. An American officer who served under him named his Virginia estate after him, and that estate is Mount Vernon. The woman's name shares nothing with any of that except three letters and a coincidence.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The front is shared with Verna and Vernon and cannot be pinned to one source; the ending is the French feminine diminutive and contributes a register rather than a meaning. Since neither half can be stated with confidence, the compound has no meaning that can be given honestly, and the name should not be handed a translation it does not have.

Pronouncing Vernelle
vur-NELL
Two syllables with the stress at the back, which is what the French-looking ending is there to produce. The doubled l and the silent e are both part of that signal and neither is pronounced.

Fashion outlook
Vernelle sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Final stress gives the name a clean, definite finish and makes it carry when called.
- Nell and Verna are two complete names sitting inside it, from different centuries.
- It works for a child of either sex, which the record confirms.
- The record carries this spelling for boys as well as girls, so it signals nothing on a form.
- Vernell, Vernelle and Vernele all exist, so spelling it out is permanent.
- The French look promises an origin the name does not have, and somebody will assert it anyway.
Nobody names a baby alone.
