Vernell is spring with an ending. Latin vernus means of the spring — the season, not the water — and it gives Verna, Vernon and the whole Vern- group. The -ell ending was one of American naming's most useful tools for turning a single syllable into a name, and it produced Vernell, Lanell, Janell and dozens more.

The story of Vernell
The -ell and -elle endings did a great deal of work in American naming through the first half of the last century, and the reason is structural: English has very few one-syllable women's names, so a short base needed extending, and -ell did it in two letters. Janell from Jane, Lanell from Lana, Vernell from Verna. The ending is not French despite looking it, and it is not a diminutive; it simply adds a stressed syllable at the back, which changes the shape of the whole name.

of the spring
Latin vernus is the adjective from ver, spring, and it gives English vernal — the vernal equinox is the spring one. Verna descends from it directly. Vernon is a separate matter: it is a Norman place name meaning a place of alders, and the two have been conflated in English for a long time. Vernell inherits from whichever of them a family had in mind, and the season is the likelier and the pleasanter.

Fashion outlook
Vernell sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Vern and Nell are both complete names and they sit in different registers.
- The Latin behind it is concrete, seasonal and easy to explain.
- The stress at the end balances well against a front-stressed surname.
- Vernelle, Vernell and Vernel are all in use, so the ending has to be given every time.
- The stress falls at either end depending on the speaker.
- It is recorded for boys as well, and Vern is a men's name, so the spelling settles less than it appears to.
