One consonant separates this from Bernard, and American records treat the two as the same name — the same family will appear under both across successive censuses. Whether that is a clerk's ear or a family's choice cannot be recovered, and it means the name has no stable identity of its own in the record.

How old is the name Vernard?

Vernard first appears in US birth records in 1900 — 125 years ago. The typical Vernard alive today was born around 1951, making them about 74 years old. About 1,000 people named Vernard are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Vernard

The front is the interesting half. There is a small group of American men's names beginning Ver- — Verl, Verlie, Vernon, Verdell and this one — that appear together in the later nineteenth century, mostly rural and mostly southern, and no European parent has ever been convincingly identified for the shortest of them. Vernon is a genuine French place name and probably supplied the sound; the rest of the cluster looks like it was built out of that sound rather than descended from it. A name like this one, ending in a real Germanic suffix, sits at the join between an invented front and an inherited back.

Meaningnot established

Not established

If the name is a form of Bernard the elements are Germanic and mean bear and hardy. If it is an independent build on the Ver- cluster it has no meaning at all. The record supports both and settles neither.

Pronouncing Vernard

vur-NARD

Two syllables with the weight at the back. Some families front the stress and say VER-nard, and the spelling supports either.

Vernard sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 44 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Vernard sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Vern sits inside it as a short form of the same period and place.
  • The stress at the back gives it a firm finish.
  • It is genuinely rare with no competing associations.
What to consider
  • It is one letter from a much commoner name and will be corrected to it.
  • The origin is unsettled and no meaning can be given honestly.
  • The generation that used it is now elderly.
