Verline
Feminine
Verline ends in a set of letters that English cannot pronounce consistently. The same ending gives machine and marine a long e, divine and canine a long i, and medicine and engine barely a vowel at all. Three readings, one spelling, and nothing on the page to tell a stranger which one a family meant.

The story of Verline
The instability of the ending is not the name's fault. English took it from French, where it was regular, and then applied it to words arriving from three different directions over five hundred years — Latin words, French words and Greek ones — each of which kept the vowel it had when it arrived. Machine came late and kept its French sound. Divine came through Norman French and shifted with every other long i in the language. Medicine wore down to nothing because it was common. The result is an ending that carries no information, and a name using it inherits the whole mess: Verline can be ver-LEEN, VER-line or VER-lin, and every one of those is a defensible reading of the letters.

Not established
The name appears in the American South in the early twentieth century alongside a whole set of relatives built the same way, and none of them has a documented origin. The front may be Vera, Verna or Verl; the ending is one that was attaching itself to almost anything at the time. What can be said is that the ending is not the English word line, despite looking exactly like it, and that no dictionary of names has ever carried an entry for this one.

Fashion outlook
Verline sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is soft and unhurried, and it belongs to a real period of American naming rather than to a fashion.
- Verl and Lyn are both available and both are usable on their own.
- It is genuinely rare while sounding entirely familiar.
- The ending has three defensible pronunciations and she will hear all of them.
- There is no meaning and no origin to give her.
- It is firmly dated to the first half of the last century.
