Our story of Verlinda
In Topeka, Kansas, a third-grader called Linda Brown had to cross railroad tracks and ride a bus to a segregated school while a white school stood a few blocks from her home; her father joined a lawsuit, and in 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ended legal segregation in American public schools. Verlinda takes that ordinary, mid-century Linda and gives it a new front, the Ver- of Verna and Vernon. It sounds familiar and yet its own.
