Where it comes from

The story of Verity

The Latin veritas traveled into Old French as verité and into Middle English as verity, meaning truth — a plain noun before it was ever anyone's name. English Puritans of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries made given names out of abstract virtues, and Verity took its place among Faith, Hope, Charity and Constance in baptismal records of the period. It has stayed in quiet, continuous English use ever since, more familiar in Britain than in the United States, where it arrived far later and remains scarce. In American records it is a recent arrival rather than a revival, carried in on the broader return of virtue names.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is transparent to any English speaker — no explanation needed once it is heard clearly.
  • Spelling follows the ordinary English word, so it is readable on sight even by people who have never met the name.
  • A documented record as an English given name going back to the Puritan virtue names of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
  • Vera is a ready-made short form that also works as a full name on a résumé.
  • Rare enough in the US that a child is unlikely to share it in a classroom.
What to consider
  • It is still a common noun as well as a name, so some listeners hear the word first — expect a beat of recognition, and the occasional pun about telling the truth.
  • Spoken quickly it can be heard as Verity, Vera or even Charity; a clear first syllable does most of the work.
  • Far more familiar to British ears than American ones, so in the US you may spell it aloud more often than you would like — though the spelling itself is never in doubt once written.
