The story of Verdie
The names built on this front — Verda, Verdie, Verdell, Verdine — appear together in the American record and behave as a group, which usually means they came from a shared source. What that source was is not recoverable. They cluster in the same regions as the Vern names and the Ver- names generally, and the whole cluster may be one family or several that happen to start the same way. The honest position is that a group of names sharing two letters is not evidence of anything, and this one has never been traced.

Not established
Nothing can be shown. The Romance word for green is the reading usually offered; a clipping of Verdell or Verda and a phonetic spelling of a family name are equally possible and equally unprovable.

Fashion outlook
Verdie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
