One vowel separates this from Viola, and Viola is doing two jobs already. It is a flower and it is an instrument, and those two are not the same word — they arrived in the language separately and mean nothing to each other, which is a surprising amount of confusion for four letters to be carrying before anybody adds a fifth.

Where it comes from

The story of Veola

The flower and the instrument are different words. The plant is Latin, the same word that gives violet, and it has named those flowers since antiquity. The instrument comes from a Provençal word for a stringed thing played with a bow, which is also behind fiddle and violin, and its resemblance to the flower is a coincidence of Romance sound changes. So an orchestra contains an instrument named after nothing in a garden, and a garden contains a plant named after nothing in an orchestra, and English has never noticed because the two never come up in the same sentence.

Not established

If the source is Viola the Latin word for a violet stands behind it. If it belongs with the American names ending the same way, it has no meaning at all. The changed vowel makes the question harder rather than easier.

Veola sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1926, with 64 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Veola sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The stress placement is clearer here than in the name it resembles.
  • Ola and Vee both sit inside it as short forms.
  • The rhythm is even and the name carries well.
What to consider
  • Viola is far commoner and this gets corrected constantly.
  • No meaning can be given with confidence.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
