Venice is named after a people Rome absorbed. Where it comes from

The story of Venetta

The Veneti spoke a language related to Latin but distinct from it, wrote it in an alphabet borrowed from the Etruscans, and left several hundred inscriptions that scholars can mostly read and not entirely understand. Rome absorbed them without much fighting and they disappeared as a separate people within a couple of centuries. The lagoon city came later, founded by refugees from the mainland during the invasions, and took the regional name — so Venice is named after a vanished people by way of a Roman administrative label.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The likeliest source is Venetia, the Latin name of the region, used as a woman's name in English since the seventeenth century, with an Italian ending attached. A blend with Venita or Juanita is also possible. What the name does not mean is anything about the city itself: the place is named after the people, and the people's own name has no accepted etymology.

How the name formed

  1. an Italic people with their own language and alphabet
  2. Rome absorbs them and keeps the regional name
  3. refugees found a city in the lagoon and take the name
  4. Venetia used as an English woman's name
  5. Venetta appears in the American record in the 1900s

Venetta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1958, with 26 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Venetta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.
