The story of Velinda
Linden wood is light, pale and does not split, which made it the standard material for shields across northern Europe, and the word for the tree became a word for the shield and then an element in dozens of women's names. Rosalind, Belinda, Melinda, Gerlinde, Sieglinde: the ending in all of them is a piece of defensive equipment. The Spanish reading arrived later and was irresistible, because it is flattering and because it matched — so an element about shields is now universally glossed as beautiful, in name books that do not mention the shields at all. Both readings are now real, in the sense that people mean the second one; only the first is historical.

Built on lind — the linden tree and the shield, not the Spanish word for pretty
The ending on Belinda, Melinda and this name comes from a Germanic element, lind, which named the linden tree and the shields made from its wood, and is also read as soft or flexible. The Spanish word linda, meaning pretty, is a separate word from Latin and attached itself to these names centuries after they were formed.

Fashion outlook
Velinda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly on sight and contains nothing difficult.
- The rhythm is balanced and the name resists being clipped.
- It is rare while sitting beside several familiar names.
- Belinda and Melinda are far better known and hers will be heard as one of them.
- The pretty reading she will be given is a later attachment rather than the origin.
- The name is tied to a particular stretch of American decades.
