The story of Vega
The Greeks made this constellation a lyre and the Arabs made it a swooping eagle, and Europe ended up with the Greek constellation and the Arabic star name — Lyra containing Vega, the falling one. Vega was the northern pole star about twelve thousand years ago and will be again in another twelve thousand. Spanish vega, a fertile plain, is a separate word and a common surname.
Meaning
the falling one
From Arabic al-nasr al-waqi, the falling eagle or vulture; medieval European astronomers took the second word and made it Vega. Arab astronomy saw an eagle with folded wings where the Greeks saw a lyre.

The Kiely test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Vega's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kiely climbed just as high around 2003, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kiely's path sketches the road Vega is walking now.
Vega sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
