Where it comes from

The story of Vedanth

Vedanta names the portion of the Vedic literature that comes at its end — the Upanishads — and then the interpretive tradition built on it, the one that produced Advaita and its rivals and has been the main current of Hindu philosophy ever since. Using it as a personal name is modern; giving children the names of concepts, deities and virtues is not. The -anth spelling belongs to Tamil, Telugu and Kannada transliteration, and it is the form that most often reaches American records from South Indian families.

Meaning

the end of the Veda; the culmination of knowledge

Sanskrit veda, 'knowledge', and anta, 'end'. Both halves are transparent and neither is disputed. The compound means the last part of the Vedic corpus and, by extension, its final conclusion. The h in this spelling marks a dental consonant English has no letter for; it is not an extra sound.

Two syllables run close together with the stress on the first. The final th is a soft dental t, made with the tongue against the teeth, not the English th of think. English speakers who say VEH-danth will still be understood.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is exact, documented and substantial — not a decorative gloss but the name of a real intellectual tradition.
  • Ved is a short form that stands on its own as a name.
  • Short enough and phonetic enough that English speakers manage it on the second try.
What to consider
  • The final -th invites the English th sound, which is not what it represents; expect that correction often.
  • Vedant and Vedanth are both in use, so the h will be dropped by people writing it down.
  • It names a school of philosophy rather than a person or a quality, which some will find striking and others will simply need explained.
