Veda
Feminine · Sanskrit roots · “Knowledge”
Veda is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 14,071 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Veda is a word before it is a name: in Sanskrit, veda means knowledge, and the four Vedas are among the oldest surviving religious texts in the world. The root behind it, vid-, "to know," is the same ancient root that gave English its "wit" and "wise." Two syllables, five letters, no silent anything — it says itself.

The story of Veda
The Vedas — the Rigveda first among them — were composed in Sanskrit in the second millennium BCE and transmitted orally for centuries before being written down, and the word itself simply means knowledge. European scholarship of the nineteenth century translated and argued over those texts widely, and Sanskrit vocabulary drifted into general reading in English-speaking countries in that period. Veda turns up in American birth records from the late nineteenth century onward, in the same era as Vida, Vesta and Verna, and it is separately in ordinary use as a girl's name in India today. Whether the American Vedas of that generation were named for the scriptures or for the sound alone is not recorded.

Knowledge, sacred lore (Sanskrit)
The Sanskrit reading is the one usually given and the one most Indian families intend: veda, "knowledge," from the root vid-, "to know." But the name's appearance in nineteenth-century American records may instead reflect a respelling of Vida, a name linked to Latin vita, "life." Both readings are live, and the spelling Veda sits comfortably in either.

Pronouncing Veda
VEE-də
VEE-də is the long-standing English pronunciation. VAY-də follows the Sanskrit vowel and is the usual reading in India and among many Indian-American families. Both are correct; deciding which one you mean before the birth announcement saves a lot of gentle correcting later.

Veda is on its second act. Revived names age gently: the generation that wore them first is far enough away that the name feels classic rather than dated.

The trade-off
- Five letters, two syllables, phonetic in English — most people can spell it after hearing it once.
- Works in both English-speaking and Indian naming traditions, which is rare for a name this short.
- An unbroken record in American use going back to the nineteenth century, so it is old rather than new.
- Recognizable as a real word to many readers, which gives it a foothold that invented spellings never get.
- Two pronunciations compete — VEE-də and VAY-də — and neither is wrong, so expect to state your preference regularly.
- It will be confused in writing with Vada, Vida and Veeda, which are all real names in their own right.
- Because veda names the Hindu scriptures, some people will hear it as a sacred word rather than a given name. Worth knowing in advance rather than being surprised by.
- In James M. Cain's 1941 novel Mildred Pierce and the 1945 film, Veda is the cold, ambitious daughter — a connection a few older readers and film enthusiasts will make.
