Kenzie
Feminine · “Short form of Mackenzie”
Kenzie is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 21,391 girls against 483 boys since 1880.
Kenzie comes down from Clan Mackenzie of Kintail in the Scottish Highlands, whose Gaelic name was Mac Coinnich. That z is a fossil: in older Scots writing it stood for the letter yogh, so the surname was once said closer to "ma-KEN-yee." Clipped to two crisp syllables, Kenzie has spent recent decades as a given name in its own right in the United States — familiar to nearly everyone, yet rarely doubled up in one classroom.

The story of Kenzie
The Mackenzies were a Highland clan seated at Kintail in Wester Ross, and their surname is the anglicized Mac Coinnich, "son of Coinneach." Scottish emigration carried the name across the Atlantic in large numbers, where — as happened with Cameron, Logan and Mackenzie itself — a clan surname was gradually taken up as a first name. Kenzie is the clipped form of that first name, and in American records it has been given overwhelmingly to girls. Its rise here is recent enough that most bearers are still young, and it is now easing back from its high point rather than climbing.
Meaning
Short form of Mackenzie, from Gaelic Mac Coinnich, "son of Coinneach" — Coinneach meaning "comely, handsome, fair"
One wrinkle worth knowing: English long used Kenneth to render two different Gaelic names, Coinneach and Cináed ("born of fire"), so Kenzie is sometimes glossed with the fire meaning. The Mackenzie line runs through Coinneach.

The Gale test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kenzie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Gale climbed just as high around 1957, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Gale's path sketches the road Kenzie is walking now.
Kenzie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Says itself. Two syllables, no silent letters, and an English speaker will read it correctly on first sight.
- Works either as a full legal name or as the everyday form of Mackenzie or McKenzie, so a family can keep both options open.
- Common enough that everyone recognizes it, uncommon enough that a child is unlikely to share it with a classmate.
- Carries a documented Highland surname line, with the same root as Kenneth behind it.
- Kenzi, Kenzy and Kenzey all exist, so expect the occasional "how do you spell that?" — brief, but lifelong.
- It reads to many people as a short form. If you want a longer name on official documents, Mackenzie or McKenzie is the natural full version; if you don't, that's fine too, but the question will come up.
- The name's whole run in the United States is recent, so it currently sits with a young age group rather than sounding like a name from any earlier era.
- In American records it goes to girls almost without exception, even though Mac Coinnich began as a Highland patronymic for sons — worth knowing if you are considering it for a boy.
