Where it comes from

Our story of Vassie

The Latin word vassus was borrowed from Gaulish, where it meant a young man or a servant, and the whole vocabulary of medieval land tenure grew out of it. A vassal held land from a lord in return for service; vassalage was the relationship; and the same root, through a French diminutive, produced varlet and then valet. One Celtic word for a lad therefore supplies both the knight kneeling to swear homage and the man laying out his employer's shirts, four hundred years apart, which is a reasonable summary of what happened to European society in between. Vassie has no documented connection to it. But the syllable has been up and down the social ladder more than most.

Fashion outlook

Vassie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Two syllables and six letters: easy to write and easy to remember.
  • It is genuinely rare without containing a sound anybody finds difficult.
  • It has a real documented place in the early American record.
What to consider
  • It reads as a name of a much older generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • It will be heard as Cassie, Jessie or Vassar by people catching it once.
  • No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
