Vanessa is one of the few names with a butterfly named after it rather than the other way round. A naturalist took the name — itself invented by a satirist a century earlier — and gave it to a genus that now includes the red admiral and the painted lady, which are among the most-watched insects in the world.

Where it comes from

The story of Vannessa

The insect naming came first in the sense that matters: by the early nineteenth century the name was well enough known in England for an entomologist to reach for it when he needed a label, and the genus Vanessa has carried it ever since. Whether he chose it for a reason is not recorded — entomologists of that period took names from mythology and literature more or less at will. The doubled n in this spelling is the ordinary English device for keeping a preceding vowel short, applied to a name whose vowel was already short, which makes it decorative rather than functional.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name was constructed rather than descended, from pieces of a real woman's name, so it has no meaning in any language. Doubling the n in this spelling adds nothing either.

Vannessa sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1987, with 123 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Vannessa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is said correctly by everyone on first hearing.
  • Nessa and Van are ready short forms with completely different characters.
  • It is a standing name across Spanish, Italian and Portuguese as well as English.
What to consider
  • Vanessa is the standard spelling and will be written instead on almost every form.
  • The doubled n adds no sound, so the difference exists only on paper.
  • The name has no meaning to pass on, which some families mind and others do not.
