Vannesa
Feminine
Vannesa puts the doubling on the wrong consonant and almost nobody notices. The standard spelling doubles the s and this one doubles the n, and because English readers repair names as they read them, the eye supplies the correct sound before the mistake registers.

The story of Vannesa
The butterfly came second. A Danish entomologist cataloguing insects gave the name to a genus in the early nineteenth century, and the best-known member of it is the red admiral, the dark butterfly with the orange bands that turns up on garden buddleia and rotting fruit across Europe and North America. Naturalists of that period took names from literature constantly and this one had been in circulation for a century by then. So the sequence runs: a poet invents a name for a real woman, the poem is widely read, an entomologist borrows it for a genus, and the butterfly is now the thing most people find if they look the word up. The woman it was made for was called Esther.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name was invented in the early eighteenth century by a writer out of parts of a friend's name, and invented names do not have meanings. Explanations offered for it, usually involving butterflies or Greek, are working backwards from things that were named after it rather than from anything that produced it.

Pronouncing Vannesa
vuh-NESS-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The s between vowels would ordinarily be voiced as a z, which is exactly what the doubling in the standard spelling prevents; this version doubles the n instead and leaves that job undone, and speakers do it anyway.

Fashion outlook
Vannesa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The spoken name is completely established and never needs to be repeated.
- Nessa is a full, current, independent name sitting in the second half.
- The Spanish single-s spelling is close enough that the name travels easily.
- The doubling is in the wrong place and will be corrected by anyone who notices.
- Vanessa is enormously commoner and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
- There is no meaning to give a child, because the name was made rather than inherited.
