Where it comes from

The story of Vanita

The Latin sense has been misread for centuries and the misreading is instructive. When the famous line about vanity of vanities was translated, the Hebrew word behind it meant a breath or a vapour — something insubstantial, gone as soon as it appears. Latin rendered it as vanitas, which at the time meant exactly that: emptiness, hollowness, the state of containing nothing. Only later did the word narrow in English to mean excessive concern with one's own appearance. So a very famous sentence about the futility of everything is now widely read as a complaint about people admiring themselves in mirrors, which is not remotely what it says.

a woman, or emptiness, depending on the language

Both readings are genuine in their own traditions and neither can claim an American record. Which one applies to any given family depends entirely on where the family came from, and the spelling gives no help at all.

Fashion outlook

Vanita sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a real name in one of the world's largest naming traditions.
  • Nita sits inside it as a completely established short form.
  • Every sound in it is easy for an English mouth.
What to consider
  • The Latin reading is unflattering and some readers will reach for it first.
  • Vanetta and Venita both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The generation that used it in America is now elderly.
