Vanda
Feminine
Vanda is Wanda spelled the way most of Europe spells it. Polish writes the v sound with the letter w, so the two forms are one name divided by an alphabet, and Italian, Hungarian, Portuguese and Swedish all use the v without anybody thinking it foreign. It is also, in botanical Latin, a genus of orchids, and that is a genuine coincidence with a Sanskrit word standing behind it.

The story of Vanda
William Roxburgh, cataloguing Indian plants at the end of the eighteenth century, needed a name for a group of orchids that live on other plants without feeding on them, and used the local one: vanda, the Sanskrit word for exactly those plants. The genus kept it, and Vanda orchids now sit in florists' windows in every country in the world. The Polish name is older and has no connection to any of that. Its route into English-language registers ran through central and southern Europe, where the v spelling is standard and the w spelling looks distinctly foreign, which is the precise reverse of the situation in Warsaw. A name can be the same name in two alphabets and still feel like two different names to the people carrying it.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The Polish name's origin is not settled. It attaches to a legendary figure in the country's earliest chronicles, and the chroniclers who wrote about her did not trouble to explain her name. Connections to the old tribal name of the Wends and to a Slavic root about water have both been proposed and neither has carried the field. The orchid genus is unrelated: the botanist who described the group took it from a Sanskrit word for the plants themselves. Two words that arrived at the same five letters by different roads.

VAN-duh
Two syllables, stress on the first, and identical to Wanda in speech. In Polish the w spelling produces precisely this sound, which is why the two forms are endlessly confused on paper and never once confused in conversation.

Fashion outlook
Vanda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, said the same way in a dozen languages, and unmistakable the moment it is heard.
- The v spelling is the international one, so it travels more easily than the Polish form does.
- It shares its letters with a flower without being a flower name, which is a rarer position than it sounds.
- It will be written Wanda by a good half of the people who hear it spoken.
- There is no agreed meaning, and the legend behind the Polish name is a chronicler's story rather than an etymology.
