The story of Valrie
The Valerii were one of the handful of families Rome remembered from before there were records worth the name. Their claim was a consul in the republic's very first year — one of the men said to have taken office when the last king was driven out — and they produced consuls, generals and magistrates for the next nine hundred years, which is a span of continuous public service that no other institution in Europe has matched. The historians of the late republic were partly writing from family archives, and the Valerii have been suspected ever since of having improved their own record. A name that old comes with the suspicion attached.
Meaning
To be strong, to be well
The Latin verb valere means to be strong or to be in good health — it is the root of valid, value and the farewell vale, meaning be well. The Roman family name built on it passed into use as a woman's name and has never meant anything else.

Fashion outlook
Valrie sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is settled, positive and connected to words English uses every day.
- It is understood across Europe with only an accent changing.
- The spelling matches the pronunciation, which the standard one does not.
- Valerie is the familiar spelling and hers will be corrected to it.
- The missing letter reads as an error to people who do not know the name is said that way anyway.
- The spelling is recorded for a few boys, but nearly every child with it is a girl.
